I am NOT a Photographer.

October 21, 2007 at 3:23 am (beautiful, camera, flower, images, photo, photography, photrade, pictures, sun, sunset)

I am lots of things.  Marketer, Daughter, Canadian, Female, Blond (well, dyed), Fun, 28, Single…the list could go on forever.

One thing I am not is a Photographer.  Seriously.  Then I started working at Photrade.  Talking to photographers.  Sounding like an idiot.  So, I thought, I should try to take some good pictures.  Maybe I’ll feel like less of a fraud (not that I ever claimed to be a photographer).

So, out I went, with my Canon Powershot in hand – and seriously – look at the results.

This makes me believe that ANYONE can be a photographer (OK, if you are a photographer please don’t kill me for saying that).  So, my photos are now posted on Photrade and hey – someone might even buy some.  I have some empty frames that I have been DYING to fill, so I think I’ll order some prints of the flower series……

Anyways, the point (if I can say I have one other than bragging about my pictures), is that ANYONE can take really great photos.  Ah the joys of technology.  Anywho, Photrade is invite only, but I do have a few invites hangin out in my back pocket, waiting for a rainy day.  So, if you post a comment I’ll share the the love back and hook you up with an invite.  Limited # though…….

New Idea – Make Videos

October 19, 2007 at 3:39 pm (Uncategorized)

So, yesterday I had the GREATEST idea ever.  OK, maybe that’s an overstatement, but I did get a great idea.  We’re going to make funny/random videos for the site.

The goal is to make videos that are cool/funny that help people understand what the site does and how it works.

So, now I need to come up with ideas……hmmmm….. possibly a good task for later tonight.   Some drinks……creative energy….skittles…..candy….alcohol…..perfect way to get the creative energy flowing 😉

I’ll let you know how the videos go – or you’ll be able to see them on the site 🙂

Making a Tour Page

October 12, 2007 at 6:45 pm (marketing, startup, website, work)

Here at Photrade.com we do it all.  That’s right, we really are “Jacks of All Trade”.  Today’s task – Make the “Take the Tour Pages” for the new release.

Man, I wish I knew more about Adobe CS3 – Anyone wanna teach me?

How do you make a great tour (I hope).

Step 1 – Look at LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of Tour pages from EVERY site around.

Step 2 – Write down what you LOVE and HATE about each one.

Step 3 – (This is where it gets hard) Pretend you have NO IDEA what the site does and try to explain it.  Hmmmm…..alternate approach – call someone who has NO IDEA what the site does and find the best way to explain it to them.  Or call like 10 of them.

Step 4 – Make the pages.  Find pretty Graphics.  Get cool screen shots.  Use engaging language.  Make it simple.  Make it clear.  Check out some page design websites for tips.  Check out some writing websites for tips.

Step 5 – Show it to people and ask them if it makes sense.  Do they get it?

Step 6 – Make a whole bunch of changes.  Ahhhhh

Step 7 – Send it to the boss.  Also known as Andrew Paradies.  Also known as Andy 754.  Also known as…..

Step 8 – Make more changes.

Step 9 – You have a tour.

Changing the Blog Focus

October 11, 2007 at 2:39 pm (marketing, photography, photrade, startup)

When I started this blog, I generally wrote about whatever random things came into my head (per the postings on Vanilla Ice, Chuck Norris, etc).  This week, I decided to change the theme of this blog and get a little more focused.  Why you ask?

First, I started another blog at typepad with my own domain name and online handle!!!!!!!!!!!!  Check it out www.kribaby.com.  I am really loving getting more into all of this online stuff (I’m now on twitter, aim, etc), and almost feel like I’m becoming an online geek (which I’m moderately OK with).

Second, since this is the blog that I use to manage the Photrade.com blog, I figured that it is a great place to write about what I’m working on with Photrade, who I’m talking to, and generally whats going on.

So, enjoy the NEW blog – Chronicals of Marketing a Startup.  This is why I’m hot…..although it’s also why I’m not.

A Brief Insight to my Insanity

October 6, 2007 at 2:53 pm (cincinnati, fun, funny, humor, life, love, Uncategorized)

So I turned 28 this week.  Probably not really a big deal, but sort of.  Two years away from the big 3-0 (YIKES), solidly in my late 20’s.  Man.  I’m not really sure where I thought I would be at this point of my life, but it certainly wasn’t here.  Living in the sweet Midwest.  Living in the US at all for that matter.  No love-life to speak of.  Falling out of love with what once seemed like the greatest job.  Still not knowing what I really want to be doing with myself (but at least on the way there I hope).  Unsure how to prioritize the things that matter in my life.  Wondering what I’m doing, why, what matters??

So, obviously this has made me a little self reflective, which is good, BUT kind of withdrawn and depressing.  Sooooo…in the true K-Rock fashion, I had to find a way to make this fun.  So a friend and I (who also turned 28) decided to make a 30 by 30 list.  The GOAL: To make a list of 30 things to do before we turn 30.  The things on the list have to be:

  1. Within my control
  2. Something I haven’t done before
  3. Stretching yet achievable

So, on Tuesday my friend and I will share our lists – and we have a moderator to ensure that we both follow the guidelines.  The idea is that this will motivate me to do the things that I really want to do.  PLUS there is the added accountability.

Trying to make “The List” further underscores how I really have no idea what I want to do.  The first 5 things were easy, but now its getting really tough to come up with things.  What do I want to do before I’m 30?  What can I actually control in my life?  How will I do them?  What if I can’t?

Questions, questions.

So, I will spend the weekend in turmoil, trying to come up with “The List” and I’ll publish it on Wednesday.  Sweet.  Stay tuned.

Walker, Texas Ranger

August 31, 2007 at 1:46 am (celebrities, funny, humor, Uncategorized)

OK, so I got home, turned on my TV and Walker Texas Ranger was on.  My initial reaction was to change the channel…..but alas, I was able to restrain myself.  A rewarding decision.

First of all, Chuck is one of my personal heros (and my myspace friend).  After learning about Random Chuck Norris Facts (http://www.chucknorrisfacts.com/) I fell in love.

Walker Texas Ranger is an amazing mix of bad acting, over acting, and deep meaningful storylines.

Second, the script writing in this show is phenominal.  Some of my fav quotes from the episode:

  • “I came to enlist your help.  See, I’m not the token N—-…”  Seriously, they just used that word – a word that even I am to uncomfortable to write.  Wasn’t this a christian show?  Seriously?  The N word, on day time television?
  • “Who the hell does that son-of-a-bitch think he is?”  “That son-of-a-bitch knows this country better than you know the warts on your wife’s backside.” “Well, why don’t we all line up and kiss his ass.” (In reference to Chuck, AKA walker).
  • Walker is about to die in a car….what does he do?  He chugs a beer (that sure as heck is what I would do).  Upon being rescued… Dude:”Ranger. Don’t die on me now dammit.  Dammit don’t die on me now.” Ranger: “Get me a beer kid”

This sent me on a quest to understand WHO wrote for this show and where else did their careers lead them.  Of the three “Creators” listed on the site, two of them haven’t done much, wheras one (a Canadian I might add) has gone on to write for The Black Donnellys, Flags of Our Fathers, Million Dollar Baby and some of the Bond Movies.  I was relieved to know that the talent has not gone to waste.

Third, the apparel used in the show is absolutely wonderful.  Tight jeans, Chuck randomly with his shirt off, mullets, moustaches, afros.  All of my favorite styles in one show.  What more could one ask for.

Finally, there is a midget (errrr – little person?) in a wheelchair.  Seriously.  What more could you ask for in a show?  Wonderfulness.  Sheer unadulterated wonderfulness.

This is why Chuck Norris is hot.

Don’t Diss the ‘Nati

August 11, 2007 at 6:27 pm (cincinnati, concerts, Friends, images, life, photo, photography, pictures, Uncategorized)

Seriously.  Seriously?  Seriously.

Its like, 108 degrees out.  And muggy.  And hot.  Maybe this is why I’m hot.

So I live in Cincinnati Ohio.  Yes, the glamorous, bustling metropolis of Cincinnati.  I moved here from Toronto.  Yes, the glamorous, blusting metropolis of Toronto.  When my company asked me to relocate to Cincinnati my exact words were “….well, in general I hesitate to use the word never but I am pretty strongly opposed to the idea”.  Good thing I didn’t say never.

OK, so the point.  Cincinnatians, and relocated Cincinnatians are always dissin’ the ‘Nati.  Really, it isn’t thatbad.  So, the reason for the diss – it’s in the midwest, its a little dated, extremely non-urban, awful downtown development…..oh, and did I mention its in the midwest.  And 108 degrees today.  And Muggy.  And this is why I’m hot.

But seriously, there are TONS of pro’s if you are an open-minded person willing to try new things.  Tons of sports teams to play on (I now captain a flag football team and play like, 5 other sports, seriously), sports to watch (Reds and Bengals), cheap arts (opera, ballet, musicals, museums), great concerts (I’ve been to like 20 since moving here – so cheap and easy to get tickets to), fun bars (OK, not many, but enough), and its uber-cheap.  I have experienced more of the arts and gone to more concerts in my two years in Cincinnati, than in the entire time I lived in Toronto.  Crazy. Oh yeah – and I have met lots of really GRRREEEAAATTTTT people here 😉

Me and the ladies 🙂

Dressed up and chewin’ some dip at the Sweet Brooks & Dunn Concert (did I mention I don’t really even like country music??)

And the next night, dressed as “Disgruntled Youths” for the Fall Out Boy Concert.

Maybe I just don’t like to be negative (doubtful), but I really don’t think that Cincinnati is that bad.  Being open to new experiences and trying new things has made Cincinnati a great place for me.  Seriously.  Try it.  Wherever you live, find one new thing to do every week.  You’ll discover so much about yourself and the city you live in.  And don’t be afraid to go places alone.  Its scary at first, but very empowering.

From the Archives – Ice, Ice Baby – My Ephemeral Brush with Celebrity

July 31, 2007 at 12:15 am (celebrities, funny, humor, Uncategorized)

Last night (March 1) a momentous event occurred – I “met” (and by met I mean touched – TWICE!!!) Vanilla Ice.  Does that make me a celebrity?  Maybe.  Does it make me a better person?  Probably.  Does it make me more interesting?  Definitely. My encounter with the has-been pseudo celebrity was everything I hoped it would be and more.

First, Vanilla Ice was scheduled to “appear” at a bar in ….. Cincinnati.  Not sing (does he “sing”), or perform – there wasn’t even a stage – just be there so that people like me could touch him and later brag about it.

If he did perform, does he even have songs other than Ice, Ice Baby?  Upon arriving home I searched for Vanilla Ice on myspace (the only reputable place to garner information about someone).  I was surprised to note that Vanilla Ice has a number of other songs – he has actually made 7 albums in total – starting with “Hooked” in 1989 (which featured Ice Ice Baby).

The next stop in my quest to learn more about the artist was www.vanillaice.com.  Opening quote from the biography page – “It’s a true story that Video Killed the Radio Star because music should not be about image. Music should be about the music! I learned the hard way.”  Poor Vanilla.  So, if he is about the music, then what’s up with an appearance where he doesn’t even perform?  “I will never be a puppet for the industry again. From this point on I will keep it real. That’s why I didn’t change the name. It doesn’t mean anything; it’s only a label.”  Does this make any sense?  Seriously.

I worked on my pick-up line for hours….(while making a sexy face) “Alright stop, collaborate and listen, Krista’s back with a brand new invention.  Vanilla, grab a hold of me tightly, do me like a harpoon daily and nightly.  Will you ever stop?  Yo, I don’t know…”   Meaningful.  But alas, when the big moment came and I was face to face with Vanilla I froze….I merely touched him and remarked about the alarmingly large number of tats that he had.  Damn.

After collecting myself I went back and to try again – this time, I brought him a sweet Coors Light (given to me free by a Coors rep).  I approached him… “Vanilla – I bought you a drink”….”Aw that’s sweet – did you really buy me a drink?  Thanks, but I have drinks back here sweetie”.  Rejected!  He probably thought I put Roofies in it – and I probably should have……  My dream of dating a former celebrity was gone in an instant.

So, my fleeting brush with a celebrity and chance for fame and stardom ended uneventfully, and all I have left is the knowledge (and the warm fuzzy feeling that it gives me inside) that I touched Vanilla Ice.  Twice. Sadly no pics for this one.  Damn.  I need to bring my camera EVERYWHERE with me.

Your “Online Self”

July 28, 2007 at 8:45 pm (blogging, Friends, fun, images, photo, photography, pictures, Uncategorized)

Top of mind today is the whole notion of your “online self” or what information/pictures/data about yourself you allow online.

For me, this is a particularly difficult question.  I like to go out and have fun with my friends, and my friends and I all post our photos online.  These are photos of me, in my free time, having fun (and possibly getting a little out of hand) with my friends.

Now, since these photos are on the internet, they could theoretically end up anywhere. Hmmmm.  Scary thought.  Does it matter?  Well – maybe.  So, I thought I would search for myself and see what came up.  What could someone find if they looked me up?

Test 1 – Googling myself.  Wwwwweeeeehhhhh.  The only things that came up were some organizations I was involved in in college, a photo taken by a local newspaper at an event, and my involvement in photrade.  So, I safely passed the google search.  Awesome.  Passed test 1.

Test 2 – Social Networking –  (which will definitely have worse results) my myspace and facebook accounts.  On facebook I’m pretty safe, since I can control who has access to view my page, although there are some interesting photos where I have been tagged by others.  Myspace results…..hhhmmmmm……not so great.  My myspace page is primarily where I connect with my friends and there are a number of photos that are maybe not overly appropriate (and involve alcohal and low cut shirts), but would just show that I like to go out and have a good time with my friends 🙂  Hmmmm this is a half pass.

Test 3 – Triangulation.  So throught triangulation – between my blogs, social networks and other affiliations, people could probably 1) figure out who I am, and 2) view photos on multiple sites posted by me.  Not so good.  My photrade pics (which anyone can see through this link) vary in content, and I have actually had a few people comment on some of them (YIKES).  My NAME isn’t associated with these, but I think that people could probably triangulate to who I really am through this.  This test is probably failed.

OK, so I kind of failed – in that there are photos (taken in good fun with friends) that could give people a less than favorable impression of me.

The next question is – does it matter?  Should I care?  So what if people can see pictures with me out having a good time and consuming adult beverages with my friends?  Who is going to look at this stuff and judge me?  Potential future employers?  Business Schools (if I ever want to apply)?  My family?  My coworkers?

I think that a fact of life is that people will judge you based on anything they know about you.  Should I care?  Does it matter than strangers might judge me based on some random photo they find of me?  Probably not.  But the reality is that I probably need to care.  Not because I think that it is right for people to care or judge me based on these things, but because they inevitably will.

Also I work for, (and therefore feel that I personally represent) a company.  Should they care?  Is it unprofessional?  I am professional in my work and my work relations, I produce strong results and conduct myself appropriately and professionally in the office and at work functions.  Why should what I do on my free time matter.

Hmmmm – I think that I need to go and set some of my photos to private (a great photrade feature lets you do this).I’d love to know what people think about this topic……..
